Yahoo/OpenID Confusion

The following are valid OpenID using Yahoo:

The following is an invalid OpenID:

When you get your OpenID from Yahoo, it tells you the ‘http://me.yahoo.com/wdr1′ bit is created.

A bit later, when you access your first OpenID site, and click “Yahoo”, it typically defaults to ‘http://yahoo.com/’.

Remembering the creation process, you add ‘wdr1′ to the end, only to get an error.

Is this something common to OpenID providers or unique to Yahoo’s implementation?

It is a problem with their site picker; it shows examples and for most it shows where your username would go. But for yahoo, it just says “yahoo.com”.

Your best bet, though, would be to have wdr1.com’s main page delegate your open ID to your provider of choice. That way you don’t have to worry about the URL structure — you can just log in with ‘wdr1.com’.
