Windows Laptop Hell

Things that will make recovering from a screwed up disk partition more painful:

  • Manufacturer (IBM) doesn’t ship actual Windows CDs, but a set of recovery CDs
  • The recovery CDs contains Windows 95, not, say, XP.
  • The upgrade version of XP won’t install unless you Windows already installed or have the actual Windows CD. (Meaning you have to spend the half hour “recovering” via the IBM set, just run the XP cd.)
  • Neither XP nor the recovery CDs recover the master boot record.
  • Getting XP fully installed & patched requires countless reboots. Setup itself requires a half-dozen or so, and then you have to keep download & rebooting for patches. It got 20 of them before it would even get to SP2. (Where I’m at now.)

Grah.

I used to think that Windows didn’t suck, it was just a matter of personal choice. Well, I had to switch back from Mac to Windows at work a month ago.

    Windows sucks balls.

if i were microsoft, i would vouch for recovery cd’s as well with all the piracy around. i found the recovery partition to be quite useful in reinstalling windows.. and ibm has some great built-in backup tools for this exact purpose in the ‘access ibm’ suite of apps. using installation cd’s is so 1995, i’m surprised you’re not complaining about the missing 3.5″ disks too.

i have the recovery cd w/ windows xp prof. if you need it. whore.
