I don’t think this thing accounts for anybody west of Kansas. Just remember people, you ignore California at your peril.

I can only assume the 20% Dixie is Laurel’s influence.

20% Dixie & 20% Yankee… do you find your nothern bits at war with your southern parts?

It’s a covert, psy-ops kind of war. But yes.

Just yesterday I finished reading Bill Bryson’s excellent “The Mother Tongue”, which talks about, well, according to the sub-title, “English, and how it got that way”. Very interesting. I’m a poor speller, but fairly anal about grammar, but this book makes me realize how dynamic the language is, and that whatever rules I think are in effect now may well not be in 20 or 200 years.
In any case, it’s a great book — highly recommended.
(BTW, the white text on green of the dialect report is extremely hard to read — maybe change it to black text?)

Thanks Jeffrey! Looks like a good read — I’ve added it to my Amazon wishlist.
Lemme see if I can figure out how to change the background… I can’t see it at *all* in my browser w/o highlighting the text.

What is Upper Midwest? I had the highest score in that category and 0% in plain old midwest!

I think Upper Midwest is probably like North Dakota, Michigan, etc…
