Yahoo! 360

Thursday, March 31st, 2005

Yahoo! 360 is live. Beta, anyway. You can find my page at:

http://360.yahoo.com/wdr1

I still have a bunch of invites left, so if you’d like one feel to just drop a comment below. (No IMs please.)

So here’s a question: who’ll move off beta/invite-only to production first — orkut or 360?

Scalia in the New Yorker

Monday, March 28th, 2005

On the flight back today I finished reading a good article on Scalia in the New Yorker. It’s slightly biased against him in some of the language, but by and large, presents a pretty fair picture. There’s a Q&A with the author, but the article itself doesn’t seem to be online. Check it out if you can.

There seems to be an upward tick in coverage of Scalia, probably not too surprising considering Rehnquist’s failing health & talk of him being a possible replacement as Chief Justice. (If Bush nominates Thomas instead, so help me, I’ll be that much closer to not voting for him again.)

Reading the aritcle, I was surprised to find out that he’s close friends with Ginsburg. That in of itself is a microcosm of why I like him so much. Far from a partisian hack, Scalia sticks to his views and is unwilling to bend them to get the result he personally would like. He feels strongly that the Court should not assume powers of the Legislative branch by creating new interpretations of existing laws. How often do you find a member of our government seeking to limit their powers?

Survivor: Death Valley

Sunday, March 20th, 2005

Just back from Death Valley. Quite literally on the “just” part, as I’ve been in my apartment under 10 minutes. I’m not sure why, but after 72 hours of being in a land where you can’t even get a radio station let alone Internet, I felt oddly drawn to the computer.

We lucked out on the weather. Despite forecasts, we didn’t get much rain, save a little bit on the drive out. Weather was almost perfect the whole time we were out there, not too warm, not too hard. And the foliage was just beautiful. Despite being named Death Valley, there were endless fields of green & dazzling yellow followers.

One thought — I’m pretty sure the Race Track is an insider park ranger joke. Moving rocks my ass.

Okay, time to shower. After a few days of not being able to, my hair is pretty nappy to say the least. I’ll post some photos latter.

Off to Death Valley!

Friday, March 18th, 2005

Well, I’m off to Death Valley for camping on an extended weekend. Still not sure if this is a good idea. I’m going to feel really stupid if I die. The name alone feels like a hint & a half. The good news is there’ll be a bunch of us, and as we all know, when times get tough, having friends around is good, as they can readily be converted to food sources.

Boo on My Yahoo!

Sunday, March 13th, 2005

Boo to My Yahoo! for redirecting to an error page when a problem pops up:

Why is this bad? Well, it pretty much breaks the reload button for no good reason. Since I’m bounced to an error page, when I reload the page, I simply go straight to the error page. Efficient yes, but I’m still going to get the error page if I reload even after the page has been fixed.

Not good design.

The generic -5 error isn’t particularly helpful either. Maybe I should be glad it wasn’t -6? Or did I just miss -4? I don’t know. What exactly am I supposed to do with this information?

While you we’re waiting for things to come back, it seems it will display anything you set for e however, given one an opportunity to express them self.

Another Quiz Meme

You scored as Sci-Fi/Fantasy. You scored Sci-Fi/Fantasy. Depending on the movie this might not deserve a “Congratulations”, but you’re interested in the future and imaginary worlds far from your own. You probably wish you could be somebody else, or live in one of the worlds from your favourite movies. Check out: Lord of the Rings, Spiderman, Star Wars, The Matrix.

Make Magazine

Friday, March 11th, 2005

I finally got my first edition of Make. The whole thing was a bit of ordeal, having to email back & forth a few times, but one of the kind editors finally fedex’ed me a copy. (According to the distribution center another copy is enroute.)

It’s a terrific little magazine. Lots of little DIY projects, including my favorite, building a mini little railgun. That’s just cool.
