If you’re a Vegas junkie like me, Bringing Down the House: The Inside Story of Six MIT Students Who Took Vegas for Millions should prove to be an interesting & quick read. Kinda makes me want to read up on card-counting again…

Amazon has an interview with the author of Life of Pi (a great read, with some interesting questions at the end). In it, he talks how Richard Parker (the 450 pound tiger that Pi is forced to share his lifeboat with for 227 days) got his name.
What does a couple of hours to kill before you have to head out?
In my case, SlashSig.
Really just a simple script that can automatically update your signature with your Karma or you system’s uptime.
The things we do when we’re bored.
Finished reading Life of Pi, self labeled as a “Book that will make you believe in God.” It’s gotten excellent reviews, and has been a best seller for some time, so I picked up.
Overall, I liked it, but I’m still pondering what exactly the author’s intention is at the end. I don’t want to give anything away, but it’s curious to say the least.
My computer has decided to pout again.
About three weeks ago it went on the fritz after it a storm out here in Nothern California. A vicious storm as it also destory my roommates power supply in her laptop.
I got my a replacement shortly before leaving for Thanksgiving. It was up and running great for about a day. Unfortunetly, when I came back, it just flat wouldn’t turn on. Not at all. The fan on the power supply wouldn’t even start to spin.
So, a few days latter, and following a trip to Fry’s to pick up a new power supply for testing purposes, I found out the suspect once again is my motherboard.
I did learn a few tricks though. (One of which, would have prevented me from needlessly going to Fry’s. Not that going to Fry’s is a bad thing. )
1) Your power swich and reset switch on your PC’s case most likely do the same thing. If your PC isn’t starting, on way to confirm or elemenitate the power switch as a cause of the problem, is switch the two. Plug the reset switch connector into where the power switch would normally go. If pressing reseting turns it on, it’s the power switch that is the problem. Otherwise, it’s something else (the power supply or the motherboard).
2) I found I can bypass the motherboard by using a paper clip to connect the green wire coming out of the power supply to one of the black wires next to. If the fan on the power supply starts to spin, it’s okay. If it doesn’t bad power supply. NOTE: **YOU** shouldn’t do this. Partly because I don’t know if this will work on other motherboards without death by electriction, but mainly because if I’m wrong, I don’t want to get sued. So don’t do this.
